You can play Blu-Ray DVDs but it will not be in High-Definition.

The screen if you watch bluray dvds on the screen if you watch bluray dvds on an sd tv has 480 lines or even 720 because there simply arent enough pixels on an hd picture of reproducing an sd tv it will look the same as your old dvd player.
