no the blue ray disks are formatted to fit the disks because they are basically 80gb because off all the hd but a normal dvd disk is about 5 gb so therefore you wouldnt even be able to fit it on .

BlueRay uses a blue laser (hence the “Blue” part of BlueRay) which is a lower frequency of laser, allowing more data/video quality to be stored on the disc.

The reason they can’t be played in normal DVD players (like yours) is because they need a blue laser, while normal DVD players only have a red laser, suitable for reading DVDs.

See, there’s the problem. It’s a lot like two people you’ve barely ever heard about, having a fight, and one of them winning. So what? Does it really matter to YOU whether a Lamborghini or a Ferrari is better than the other? Especially since neither one is parked in YOUR garage?

It’s been a fight between two hi-def formats, neither of which has ever played in a standard DVD player/recorder. And most people are still buying/renting standard DVD’s. So, whoever won the hi-def format war is only meaningful to companies and techno-geeks. And the relatively few people who’ve just GOT to spend their money as soon as possible on any/every new gadget that comes out.

To answer your question, you never could play a Blu-Ray disc (or HD-DVD either) in your player. And no, you will not have to buy a new player anytime within the next few years.

Buy a separate receiver & 5 speakers + one sub woofer. I know what your asking, you don’t want to buy a htib (home theater in a box) b/c they come with a player. So go that route. They usually have more power & flexibility.

No you can’t: Blu-ray discs were created in a different format and are actually different types of discs than a DVD. Blu-Ray hold twice as much information than regular dvds and thus needs a different type of laser (i think) to read the material.

My bluray is better looking hd but for the movie is on doublelayer dvd and better but there are some movies where will probably upscale fantastic job.

Yes…you can use the component cables to hook up a Blu-ray player but will only see 1080i displays. That is nearly as great as 1080p so don’t worry about it.

The deal should be if you are upgrading to a surround sound system you don’t buy a cheap box set. Make sure the receiver that you get can handle more than one HDMI input or multiple component inputs. Sounds like you also need to make sure it has component (red, blue, green) out to the TV so you can hook it up to the old Samsung. Why? Because you run your Blu-ray, Xbox and TV source (Cable or Satellite) into the receiver to get all of them to play through the surround sound speakers. If it has enough input then you never have to unplug anything or use the TV speakers. Just use the receiver to switch between sources.

In spite of what everyone says, there is no difference in picture quality between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. The difference is Blu-Ray is a “denser” media. In other words, more digital info can be stored in that format. So you can get more editor/director outtakes , studio propaganda and spam on the disk. I heard a show on the radio (PBS) a couple of days ago when Warner signed on to Blu-Ray. The gist was, “Don’t count out HD-DVD just yet”. But the consensus was universal, “Wait until the market decides before you buy”. I predict that Blu-Ray will win like VHS over Beta in the tape format. Crutchfield, a major seller has gone Blu-Ray but the players cost upwards of $400. Wait until the market decides.

Advantage relative to what? HD DVD and Blu-ray give identical picture and audio quality and both are better than normal DVD. On the other hand they cost more too. Blu-ray is probably preferable to HD DVD (even though it is much more expensive) because there is a wider range of movies … and HD DVD may disappear in the next year or so. That said, an HD DVD player makes an excellent inexpensive upconverting DVD player (and will also play the soon to be on sale HD DVD disks).

Re the BDPS300 …. that’s a high price for an obsolete player.

This is the model Sony introduced 2 weeks before implementation of the Profile 1.1 spec (which required any player introduced after Oct 31, 2007 to be compliant with version 1,1 of the Blu-ray spec … i.e. Picture in Picture / secondary audio, on board storage). They didn’t tell consumers it was essentially obsolete (unlike the PS3 which they knew could be updated to Profile 1.1 via firmware, the BDPS300 cannot (See link)). Another benefit of buying from Sony!!!

It will play movies fine, but won’t play any of the newer special features, and only Profile 2.0 players are guaranteed to have internet connectivity to access on-line extras, updates, etc.

These are all features ALL HD DVD players have.

So … benefits over other Blu-ray players: NONE.

The PS3 is the best bet on a features/money basis.

There are 2 company’s planing on a “hybrid player” samsung and LG. supporting Blue-Ray and HD-DVD in the same player. and like the new toys from Toshiba’s HD-DVD and samsung’s BD-player they’re likely to offer DVD playback and up converting them to 1080p.

Some films are simply formatted to be greater than 16×9 aspect ratio. They may have features (such as matting or P&S) to fully use your screen height though.

You can, but like you were wondering, it won’t have the full effect. HDTVs have more lines (like computer screens with higher dot pitch etc…) of resolution. You will get a good picture but no better than a regular DVD.

I don’t think there is any question that future players will play both types, just as you can now buy CD players that will play both DVD-Audio and SACD discs. Right now the players being offered are restricted to playing back one or the other. All will play the current format DVDs

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD provide better quality pictures than regular DVD. You need to watch side-by-side with good movies to tell the difference (who needs “Meet the Fokkers” in Hi-Def?).

Blu-Ray seems to be winning because in the last few days, Warner, the company with a huge backlog of old movies, decided to release any future discs only in Blu-Ray not HD-DVD. (And in regular DVD, too…) So they have more of the good titles from more studios released on BR than HD.

BR also fits more data on a disc (Up to 50Gb, vs 30 for HD). Thisdoesn’t affect the picture quality (1080p in both cases) but does permit bigger and fancier selections of extras - if the disc happens to have them.

However, most BR players are still running V1.0 of the specification. The newest spec (V1.3?) allows internet connect games, extras, but nobody sells one yet. So you won’t get the full functionality off any player you buy today, you’ll need to buy a better one in a year or two.

Yup, Blu Ray films will need to be played on a Blu Ray player. They are backward compatible meaning that conventional DVDs will play on the BR and may even look better. But BR films need a BR machine.

It is to do with the number of lines in the scan of the screen. Normal DVD through normal DVD player = 645 lines (PAL encoding). Normal DVD through Blu-ray player = 720 lines or 1080 lines, so much clearer.

Upscaling DVD players that cost under $200 are a big scam.
Your HDTV scales all inputs to its native resolution, so which do you think is going to do a better job, the $3,000 HDTV or the $79 upscaling DVD player? The only upscaling DVD players that do a better job than the TV are ones with Realta, Reon or Anchor Bay processing chips inside them, and you will NOT find those for under $200.

In addition plenty of the new receivers on the market now have better upscaling than the budget players. Truly, a big scam.

Nevermind that the upscaling doesn’t magically change the native 480i resolution of the DVD. Garbage in, garbage out. You still get the same pixelation and macroblocking that was on the low bitrate MPEG-2 encoded DVD to begin with.

“writersblock” is obviously a bit jaded and feeding you plenty of misinformation. The “profiles” that he’s talking about merely added features. The actual movie is still playable on ALL Blu-ray Disc players. Certain features like internet connectivity require a BD-Live player that’s hooked up to the internet, if you don’t run an internet connection to the player, you can’t access the features. Bonus View discs when played on the original players will allow you to view all the PIP features as separate featurettes, thus you’re not missing anything there either.

Also, I don’t know who is stupid enough to pay MSRP pricing for discs, because most BLu-ray Discs are within a few $’s of their special edition DVD counterparts. There are LOADS of Blu-ray Discs available for under $20, you just have to take a moment to look for them.

The difference in image of a Blu-ray Disc over an upscaled DVD is night and day unless you’re sitting 20ft away from a 40″ screen.

Unless you’re DVD player has crapped out, I’d hold off for just four more months when you’ll be able to score a fully functioning Blu-ray player for $199 on Black Friday, then again in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

The PS3 has been rated the best Blu-ray player by CNet. That said, it’s relatively expensive if you don’t want/need the other functions (e.g. games, streaming video) and many don’t like the looks of the PS3 since it doesn’t match their other components. It is one of the fastest loading players though.

If all you want is to watch movies almost any of the current players are going to work for you. If you want to get TrueHD or DTSHD sound you need a player with built in audio decoders.

Oppo are also going to introduce a Blu-ray player soon that also plays SACDs (and possibly DVD-A), and at least one player has been Divx certified … so consider whether you want the player to handle other media formats than Blu-ray/DVD/CD.

Yes, it is one of the best BD players on the market, as long as you don’t need 5.1 analog audio outputs.

1. It has HDMI 1.3, and was way ahead of the pack with that one.

2. It has an Ethernet port for software upgrades–I think there might be only one standalone player that has this. I could be wrong in that the PS3 is the only BD player to have this feature. This is a VERY important and advantageous feature.

3. It has, by far, the fastest start-up time of any BD player. Some take over a minute. The PS3 takes like 15 seconds.

4. OH! and it’s the cheapest BD player.

The main advantage is that the major studios seem to be backing Blu Ray……. It has a slightly larger capacity than HD-DVD although it is more expensive and does have some downsides.

Although for the immediate future it appears to be the future of hd movies until digital downloads overtake it.

And to answer your second question, no dvd’s do not have the same quality as blu-ray. Blu-ray are a hundred time more enjoyable. Clearer image and the colors pop out even more. Over all a richer picture. You’ll be amazed, I was.

It is an excellent Blu-Ray player. And an excellent DVD player (with latest software upgrade).
The only problem I see is incorporating it into HT system universal remote - it uses Bluetooth, and not the RF. If you use universal remote for your HT, you should get the USB IR adapter for PS3.

All the magazines compare the preformance (response & video quality) of stand alone players to the PS3 and few come close to the quality of the PS3.

I recommend you get a PS3 it’s like buying a top of the line Blue-Ray player and getting a free game system, web browser and entertainment system. For your lcd it depends on lcd and also have special hardware that is the right size from 480 lines to 720 or 1080p.
An upscaling dvd players produce better job than other upconverting dvd player usually has special hardware and software written specifically to look nearly as good as bluray but guess the image size for your lcd it will enhance the right size for your lcd it wont look nearly as good as bluray but guess the similarity between the picture by upscaling the tv just.
For your lcd tv just enlarges the picture since it depends on hardware and software some upconverting dvd player usually has special software some upconverting dvd players it wont look better on lcd and also will deinterlace the image size.

The Playstation 3 is a very good Blu-Ray DVD player and isn’t a “low end” model in any way. Sony is known for hardly never making entry level products, they only make the top tier products.

Also, the PS3’s Blu-Ray capabilities can be upgraded via Software updates and add’s new features to the PS3’s Blu-Ray features. As a matter of fact, the last update in December 2007 included a Blu-Ray update for the Playstation 3.

However, stand alone Blu-Ray DVD players can’t be upgraded via Software updates.

Yeah the quality of your video is determined by how much information is displayed. Regular DVD might have 480 lines making up the picture. A BlueRay DVD has 1080 lines making up the picture. When you upconvert a regular DVD, you are basically “stretching” the picture out, but you are not getting any more quality out of it. The cable you are using is not going to matter, it is the quality of the source that counts.

For instance, if you have two of the same photo on your computer, one is 320*240 and the other is 1024.768, and you take the smaller photo and increase its size with some editing software to make it 1024.768, you know its not going to look as good as the one that was 1024.768 already. Same idea.

The above answer will give you amazing sound, but that solution takes a lot of time and money. If you want a “quick fix” that yields entirely decent results, consider the Onkyo lineup of HT systems. It won’t match up to the piece-by-piece assembly outlined by Robert P, but it will be a once-and-done expenditure that delivers admirable results. As long as you get a receiver with analog 5.1 or 7.1 inputs, HDMI 1.3 will not be as important. Especially if you do not buy a high-end system like the one described above, you would not really reap the benefits of having a 1.3 receiver.

Sure, for $179 it’s worth finding out for yourself. Personally (and I am a big Sony LCD HDTV fan), I would choose a Pioneer Blu-Ray over Sony (unless I was willing to invest into a Sony ES model), and Pioneer Elite is my first choice for best value for high quality and reliability.

I have seen a lot of used or defective entry level Sony Blu-Ray players on eBay, so I wonder if their reliability is not the best. I never have been big on Sony electronics outside of their TVs over the years, except for Sony ES gear which I do like if the price is right(ly discounted).

Actually as long as you have a HDMI hookup between ur PS3 and HDTV the quality is amazing!!! As a video director and a graphic designer I have an eye for these sort of things. The only thing that will hinder it will be the quality of the HDTV and not the quality of the Blu Ray, which is Excellent quality.

The upconverter will scale 480 lines (SD) to either 720p or 1080p. The same function is being done by your HDTV as well (via component or HDMI), so in essence upconverting is not offering much that can’t be done by the TV to begin with!

Blu-ray can actually display true 1080p content. There is usually a big difference between interpolated lines (upconversion) and real lines (1080p).

the best one they have out currently is the Model: BDP-S350, runs about 325.00 plays all Plays BD-R, BD-RE, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW and JPEG

but the PS3 is still better due to the added capabilities, not just a video game console

prices will drop and better models come out ever 6 months so by Xmas time there might be a better one waiting for you

Raymond is right, if the DVDs are ripped (not saying they are of course), there will be numerous errors while playing the disc, such as no audio, a split or zoomed picture, constant commentary, etc. That’s because modern DVDs contain anti-pirating technology, so the more recent the DVD is, the worse the conditions will be when it is played.

Good joke. Needed that. The lighting in Best Buy is totally different to how you would watch your set. Most have the contrast on super high to “attract the eyes” of passing customers. That isn’t what you want.

You need to calibrate it with a disc. I suggest DVE or AVIA discs

Blu-Ray Disc’s do use region codes..

Region A is North and South America, and southeast Asia including Japan, Korea, and Taiwan

Region B is Europe, Africa, Australia, Middle East

Region C is Russia and China

I suppose you could go to amazon.co.uk and by a Region B player, but you would not be able to play Region A discs on it

It has amazing picture quality and great color. Unless you are into action movies or movies with a lot of detail I wouldn’t suggest a Blu-Ray player. They are extremely expensive and so are the blu-ray discs.

Why use Bose at all? Their only advantage is they are compact. Their disadvantage is speaker placement because unless they have made major changes to the design, the wall behind them actually becomes part of the system. Yamaha makes some dynamite speakers and systems at less over-all cost.

Hi. T J. You already have a good Source (the DVD Player) and one of the best displays (1080P) so you really should get the best Receiver you can afford first. You don’t have to buy all of the speakers together .Just start of with the front two you would normally use for stereo and add the others when you can increase your budget.Even two cheap ones will do for the moment.A better Receiver will give you a better sound to send to the speakers.If you were to buy the speakers first and then just a cheap Receiver you wont get a good sound.The speakers can only reproduce what is given to them. Here is the order of importance of equipment.
1. Source
2.Pre-Amp
3.Power Amp
4.Speakers.

No one else on Answers agrees with this chain of equipment in this order to get the best sound,BUT IT IS CORRECT.trust me i have been listening to hi fi gear for the past 45 years and other audiophiles agree to what i have said.You must put something good into the system to get something good out of your speakers.

Yes, you can use a Blu-ray player on a SD TV. The player scales the video output. HD movies should look as good or better than SD movies.

Your mind is made up, BUT here’s my ‘2 cents’
If your current setup doesn’t look very good you may have a setting or cable issue. For example, are you using HDMI (or Component) cables? If not that alone will degrade the signal.

Potential improvement depends on what TV you have. You say Sony Bravia, but not whether it is 720p or 1080p.

If you have am 1080p model it will benefit from Blu-ray. If you can get it for a good price go for the Sony stand alone Blu-ray player (it may not be the cheapest or the most versatile (cf PS3), but it’s an OK player and all you need to enjoy HD movies). Make sure you use HDMI to connect (and don’t worry about buying expensive cables … any Category 2 certified HDMI 1.3 cable

Backward compatibility
While it is not compulsory for manufacturers, the Blu-ray Disc Association recommends that Blu-ray Disc drives should be capable of reading standard DVDs for backward compatibility. For instance, Samsung’s first Blu-ray Disc drive can read CDs, regular DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs. All other Blu-ray Disc players that have been released so far are also capable of DVD playback though some early Blu-ray Disc players and drives did not support CD playback.

Ongoing development
Front side of an experimental Blu-ray DiscAlthough the Blu-ray Disc specification has been finalized, engineers continue working to advance the technology. Quad-layer (100 GB) discs have been demonstrated on a drive with modified optics (TDK version) and standard unaltered optics (”Hitachi used a standard drive.”).[69][70] Hitachi stated that such a disc could be used to store 7 hours of 32 Mbit/s video (HDTV) or 3.5 hours of 64 Mbit/s video (Cinema 4K). Furthermore TDK announced in August 2006 that they have created a working experimental Blu-ray Disc capable of holding 200 GB of data on a single side, using six 33 GB data layers.[71]
Also behind closed doors at CES 2007, Ritek has revealed that they had successfully developed a High Definition optical disc process that extends the disc capacity of both competing formats to 10 layers. That increases the capacity of the discs to 250 GB for Blu-ray compared to 150 GB for HD DVD using the same process. However, they noted that the major obstacle is that current reader and writer technology does not support the additional layers.[72]
JVC has developed a three layer technology that allows putting both standard-definition DVD data and HD data on a BD/DVD combo. If successfully commercialized, this would enable the consumer to purchase a disc which could be played on current DVD players, and reveal its HD version when played on a new BD player.[73] This hybrid disc does not appear to be ready for production and no titles have been announced that would utilize this disc structure.
In January 2007, Hitachi showcased 100 GB Blu-ray Disc, which consists of four layers containing 25 GB each.[74] Unlike TDK and Panasonic’s 100 GB disc, they claim this disc is readable on standard Blu-ray drives that are currently in circulation, and it is believed that a firmware update is the only requirement to make it readable to current players and drives.[75]

Competition from HD DVD
Main article: Comparison of high definition optical disc formats
The DVD Forum (which was chaired by Toshiba) was deeply split over whether to go with the more expensive blue lasers or not. Although today’s Blu-ray Discs appear virtually identical to a standard DVD, when the Blu-ray Discs were initially developed they required a protective caddy to avoid mis-handling by the consumer (early CD-Rs also featured a protective caddy for the same purpose). The Blu-ray prototype’s caddy was both expensive and physically different from DVD, posing several problems.[12] In March 2002, the forum voted to approve a proposal endorsed by Warner Bros. and other motion picture studios that involved compressing HD content onto dual-layer DVD-9 discs.[13][14] However, in spite of this decision, the DVD Forum’s Steering Committee announced in April that it was pursuing its own blue-laser high-definition solution.[15] In August, Toshiba and NEC announced their competing standard Advanced Optical Disc.[16] It was finally adopted by the DVD Forum and renamed HD DVD the next year,[17] after being voted down twice by Blu-ray Disc Association members, prompting the U.S. Department of Justice to make preliminary investigations into the situation.[18][19] Three new members had to be invited and the voting rules changed before the vote finally passed.[20][21]

In the meantime, Sony spun off Professional Disc for DATA from the Blu-ray Disc project. It was essentially Blu-ray Disc with higher-quality media and components. The devices were too expensive for the consumer mass market. Instead, it was aimed at the professional data storage space market as a replacement for their line of 5.25″ MO drives. It was announced in October 2003, with the first devices shipping in December of the same year.[22][23].

Blu-ray and HD DVD shared most of the same methods of encoding media onto disks with each other, using the same methods of encoding media onto disks as well as the default method of digital rights management, AACS. Blu-ray discs have a higher storage capacity than HD DVD discs had (50 GB vs. 30 GB) and Blu-ray discs also have higher bandwidth (48Mbit/sec vs. 30Mbit/sec), while including more DRM in the specification.

On 19 February 2008, Toshiba announced it was ending production of HD DVD devices [24], allowing Blu-ray Disc to become the industry standard for high-density optical disks. Universal Studios, the sole major movie studio to back HD-DVD since inception, shortly after Toshiba’s announcement said, “while Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray.” [25]

I am not sure what the blu ray players are going for anymore but I have a ps3 blu ray looks awesome as it would on a reg player on it and it was cheaper then an actual blu ray player then! You can get a 40gb ps3 for 399.00 now! I just looked for a decent blu ray player you are looking at around 499.00

Actually Blu-Ray’s are NOT DVD’s, they are based on the same technology.
DVD = Digital Versatile Disc
BD = Blu-Ray Disc

But for awhile many people probably will be calling them DVD’s just like when DVDs fiurst appeared people were calling them movie CD’s

Anyway.. to answer your question, No Blu-RAy disc can not be played in a DVD player.

DVD’s can be played in a Blu-Ray player though, Blu-Ray players play:

Get yourself one of the calibration discs that are around, like Digital Video Essentials. Or a cheaper alternative is to go to a video store like Blockbuster and rent the Pixar Movie “Cars” in Blue Ray form. Make sure it has the THX logo on it. Those discs include a calibration program under the setup menu. If you want to always have the calibration program around, then buy the disc. The purchased disc also includes a set of blue-filter glasses that help with adjusting color balance. There are other movies that have the THX Calibrator. Try Googling “THX optimizer” for a list of titles. You’ll probably find something you’d actually want to own.

I would have to know exactly how you have the player hooked up but lets assume you have a digital coax cable or digital optical cable hooked up into the digital input of a non true hd receiver.Make sure in the disc menu you choose 5.1surround and not the true hd sound. Note that on some blueray discs there is no regular 5.1 surround audio only the hidef surround audio. If you mean that you have problems only with regular dvds I would suspect it isn’t hooked up correctly or not programmed correctly in the menu. If you could give me more details I could help further.

First a Blu Ray is not a DVD and a Blu Ray Player is not a DVD Player. They are both discs but one is a Digital Versatile Disc and the other is a Blu Ray Disc.

Not only do you need to adjust the picture setting on your TV, most Blu Ray players also have adjustment that you can mess with. An upscaled DVD will be good but not as good as an actual 1080p blue Ray moview playing.

Also, HDMI Monster cables and Composite Vizio cables will have a grate difference. I heard that HDMI loses quality is it’s longer then 6ft. I’m not positive about this and I really doubt it but research it. Also A Vizio will never look or sound as good as a Sony or a Samsung, so don’t over compare.

this actually sounds like a combination of both, bcuz i cant see u having to completely unplug the entire player jus to make one movie play. if it only happens with that movie then u may have gotten a dud. on that same token blu-ray players arent the most reliable consoles to play ur media.

Many of the features in 1.3 are optional. Both your source and destination can claim they are “1.3″, but not give you any of the new features.

A 1.0 HDMI cable was designed to handle 1080p video.

Unless you are burying the cable in a wall, you dont need to worry about upgrading the HDMI cable right now.

The picture is TWICE as sharp as HDTV broadcasts but the Blu-ray players are backwards compatible with non-HDTVS, offering improved color and clarity over DVD (even on an analog TV). Check out this chart:

Almost all Blu-Ray players will player your regular DVD’s I personnaly have not seen a player that can not play a DVD, but have heard there a are couple. A Blu-Ray player will also upconvert a standard DVD to near HD quality, not quit as good as a Blu-Ray dics, but better then your regular DVD player
